Breath Is Life

Prana is the vital life force animating and governing the mind and body. Various yogic breathing techniques can be leveraged to stimulate this subtle energy flow.

The first step is to become more conscious of our breathing in daily life. When our breath is rapid and shallow, we perpetuate states of high cortisol and we activate our fight-or-flight response (the sympathetic nervous system). When we habituate slower and deeper breathing patterns, we work towards stabilizing states of calm and healing.

Conscious breathing is also a key component of mindfulness/concentration meditation. A beneficial relationship with the breath is further developed through this type of contemplation.

Regular practice of active breathing exercises can also help us optimize our health. One western practitioner, Wim Hof, has popularized a technique derived from Tibetan Tummo (inner fire) that stimulates cardiovascular oxygenation, immune function, and the autonomic nervous system. It involves alternating between rapid, deep breathing cycles and periods of breath retention. It's exhilarating and pleasurable.

Brief explanations of additional pranayama techniques can be found at Brett Larkin's site. Experimentation is recommended, as different practices address imbalances within the body/mind system.
